Flavonoids and the CNS.

چکیده
Flavonoids are present in almost all terrestrial plants, where they provide UV-protection and colour. Flavonoids have a fused ring system consisting of an aromatic ring and a benzopyran ring with a phenyl substituent. The flavonoids can be divided into several classes depending on their structure. Flavonoids are present in food and medicinal plants and are thus consumed by humans. They are found in plants as glycosides. Before oral absorption, flavonoids undergo deglycosylation either by lactase phloridzin hydrolase or cytosolic β-glucosidase. The absorbed aglycone is then conjugated by methylation, sulphatation or glucuronidation. Both the aglycones and the conjugates can pass the blood-brain barrier. In the CNS several flavones bind to the benzodiazepine site on the GABA(A)-receptor resulting in sedation, anxiolytic or anti-convulsive effects. Flavonoids of several classes are inhibitors of monoamine oxidase A or B, thereby working as anti-depressants or to improve the conditions of Parkinson's patients. Flavanols, flavanones and anthocyanidins have protective effects preventing inflammatory processes leading to nerve injury. Flavonoids seem capable of influencing health and mood.

Antioxidant screening of some medicinal plants of Iran
One of the most reactive and dangerous agents for the living cells is reactive oxygen free radical species (ROS). When there is an imbalance between ROS generating and scavenging systems (oxidative stress), tissue damages will appear in human body such as degenerative disorders of CNS like Alzheimer's disease. Recently, a high interest in medicinal plants containing antioxidants has been increa...

متن کاملThe Role of Flavonoids on Oxidative Stress in Epilepsy
BACKGROUNDS Oxidative stress can result from excessive free-radical production and it is likely implicated as a possible mechanism involved in the initiation and progression of epileptogenesis. Flavonoids can protect the brain from oxidative stress. In the central nervous system (CNS) several flavonoids bind to the benzodiazepine site on the GABAA-receptor resulting in anticonvulsive effects. ...

The projected increase in the incidence of dementia in the population highlights the urgent need for a more comprehensive understanding of how different aspects of lifestyle, in particular exercise and diet, may affect neural function and consequent cognitive performance throughout the life course. In this regard, flavonoids, found in a variety of fruits, vegetables and derived beverages, have ...
متن کاملP134: Central Nervous System and Blood Biomarker in Stroke, CNS Bleeding, Epilepsy, and Traumatic CNS Injury; MicroRNAs
A Central nervous system (CNS) hemorrhage is bleeding in or around the brain and spinal cord. Reasons of CNS hemorrhage include high blood pressure, cancers, drug abuse, abnormally weak blood vessels that leakage, and trauma. Regression of CNS bleeding was confirmed to be relatively repetitive in patients with severe FV, FX, FVII and FXIII deficiencies. Generally in CNS hemorrhage, radiological...
